Membership Report

Membership Report Oct 2000 (PDF 48KB)

December 2001

1.  Our free offer for guests to attend the monthly member meetings without the £20-00 charge.  The October meeting was well attended, how about the November meeting which I was unable to attend.  In future meetings we should have a stack of membership forms available and a register for guests so that we can write to them.

2.  I have received a list of 32 CISA passers who have received complimentary membership until the end of the year.  I will send them letters, enclosing a marketing brochure and inviting them to take up full membership, citing the numerous benefits of membership of ISACA meetings.

3.  With regard to the $750 (£500) marketing grant, we need to carry out step one of our plan (see below).  Does anyone have any names in the following sectors (Healthcare, Retail/Wholesale, Transportation, Construction/Petrochemical and Utilities)?  Who is able to help me get answers to the questions?

Step One

Conduct a small study to establish the reasons for low representation in those sectors.  Some of the questions we will be seeking answers to are:
- is there sufficient awareness within the management/audit departments in those sectors of the benefits ISACA can provide;
- how does London Chapter compare with other UK and large chapters internationally;
- the approximate number of IS Auditors within the organisations;
- are there any barriers to IS auditors in these sectors joining ISACA

Step Two

We will then seek to publicise ISACA to the targets that we identified during step one as described in the application form.

November 2001

  1. The membership statistics are now on the website, thanks to John M for suggesting it and Allan for updating the website.

  2. At the October meeting, we seem to have had a number of non-members attending (Nancy, do we have actual numbers of guests)?  Could we collect contact details of guests for the next meeting?  Also, it might be a good idea to have blank membership forms to hand out?

  3. Have applied to Rolling Meadows for marketing funds.  Main aim is to identify marketing opportunities in the industry sectors that seem to be under-represented in London Chapter at the moment.  Thanks to John M and Karen for suggesting applying for the funds and for comments.

September 2001

Welcome back everyone, and I hope you all had a great summer.

There has been a slow but steady stream of enquiries throughout the summer for people wanting to join the Chapter.

I would like to run a membership drive and am looking for suggestions. One idea would be to provide some kind of incentive to a member who introduces someone who subsequently becomes a member - maybe some wine vouchers? Another would be to target those who are CISA's but not members.  How can we get hold of a list of these?  Another would be to encourage people to bring a guest to the members meetings - visitors are potential members.  If anyone has any great ideas, please be free to let me konw.  Can we discuss this at the meeting?

I will soon be going to attend the Research Board meeting, and am looking for new areas to research.  I was thinking about Peer-to-Peer Computing?  Does anyone think this is a good idea or do you have any suggestions?

Following Alan Boardman's suggestion, we had a meeting here at Rabobank to discuss ISACA's response to the FSA's discussion paper on regulation of ecommerce.  Alan will quite probably have more to say on this.

Current membership stands at 678.

June 2001

According to the May roster London Chapter's membership now stands at 640 down from 775 in the April one, following the annual purge.

On the 31st May, I sent the following reminder email to the 170 members who do not seem to have renewed:

"It seems that you have not yet renewed your membership for 2001.

If this was an oversight on your part, please send in your renewal form and payment (directly by Credit Card to the US, preferably) as soon as possible.  Otherwise you will no longer be a member of ISACA London Chapter, the second largest in the world.  You will also be missing out on the opportunity to attend our excellent free monthly events, excellent value seminars and conferences and award-winning publications such as Datawatch and the Control Journal.

If you have already renewed, or have decided that ISACA is not necessary for your career development, please ignore this message, and I am sorry to have wasted your time."

I have been getting replies coming back from these members (and will continue to for the next few weeks) with a variety of responses such as "just renewed", "forgot to renew", "could not find form" etc.  Here is one example:

"It is my intention to renew and have unfortunately due to work commitments not got round to doing the necessary - I have also lost the form - can you please send me another copy."

I have been forwarding these to Nancy as they arrive.  Although it is not easy to say how many will actually renew as a result of the reminder, I would guess, we might otherwise have lost about 20 or so, so this is quite a worthwile exercise.

April 2001

  1.  quite a heavyweight. Are we making the most of our status, and are we supporting our members as well as we can?
  2. I recently had to phone around our membership in order to locate someone fitting a specific profile to attend a CISA review meeting in Chicago. However, I was surprised to find a very large number of members details were incorrect – telephone numbers and even employers. Could something be put in Datawatch and/or the website reminding members that they must update their details which they can do through the isaca.org website.
  3. The research board is finalising a monograph on Virtual Private Networks which I was involved with. In addition, I am managing an Oracle DBMS project as well as a PeopleSoft project. There is also the possibility to help with a benchmarking exercise for CoBIT which we will be discussing further at the Awayday.

February 2001

Current membership stands at approx 726. Seven new members joined in January 2001. I get about 4 or 5 enquiries each month from people wanting to know how they can join the Chapter or register for CISA. I refer these either to the website as well as to Nancy. Would it be possible to have links on the Chapter homepage to the pages with instructions on how to join the Chapter, how to register for CISA and the CISA workshops?

The Chapter roster shows that there are about 200 members who are living and working outside the London area. These people may be reluctant or finding it difficult to attend the monthly Chapter meetings. As a result, they are not benefiting as much from the Chapter and will be losing out on networking opportunities. The Chapter generally would also be losing out through the non-involvement of one-quarter of our membership.

One possibility would be to schedule a couple of Chapter meetings during the year in outside the City location. Another would be to hold a separate meeting once a quarter. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas about improving this situation, please let me know and I can organise something accordingly.
