Advertising Rates April 2001 (Word 46KB)

Advertising Strategy May 2000 (Word 64KB)

Report from the Publications Committee for Chapter Committee Meeting 2nd May 2001

Datawatch:

Datawatch issue number 48 is has been distributed and you should all have received your copies.

Copy date for DW49 is 8th June – not as far away as it may now seem. Please bear it in mind if you are due to be submitting an article or copy of any description.

We have been asked to provide subsidised copies of Datawatch to the Slovenian Chapter. To be discussed at the meeting.

In the interest of generating more income for the Chapter, at the last meeting of the Editorial Board, it was decided to increase advertising rates across the board by 5%. It was felt that this still represented very good value for money for our advertisers as:

  • Rates had not increased for 3 years
  • In that time membership (and hence the market they reach) had doubled
  • There is an improved, more professional look and feel to DW
  • Circulation has increased and we supply the UK and Ireland now, and have received enquiries from other European Chapters

A copy of the new rates is attached with this email.

As ever, feel free to pass on any issues/comments/ ideas to any member of the Editorial Board. I hope to make at least part of the meeting but this is dependent on meetings finishing on time and trains arriving on time.

Report from the Publications Committee for Chapter Committee Meeting 9th April 2001

Datawatch:

Datawatch issue number 48 is at the printers (due back today) and will be distributed imminently (an update will be given at the meeting.)

Copy date for DW49 is 8th June – not as far away as it may now seem. Please bear it in mind if you are due to be submitting an article or copy of any description.

Comments from the last committee meeting have been brought to my attention via the minutes. The reason publication of DW47 was delayed was due to awaiting a page of advertising which was requested late on. To publish without the advertising would have meant sacrificing around £650 of Chapter income.

As ever, feel free to pass on any issues/comments/ ideas to any member of the Editorial Board.

Report from the Publications Committee for Chapter Committee Meeting 7th March 2001

Datawatch:

Datawatch issue number 47 has been published and distributed.

The deadline has now passed for copy for Edition 48 and we are still (at the time of writing) a couple of regular items short. Apart from that the amount of copy we are holding looks as if it will be sufficient. The theme will generally be PKI which is treated by a couple of articles and the Netwatch review. More copy is still always welcome for John’s article bank and for use in DW49, copy date for which is 8th June. It sounds a long way off now, but it will come up in flash!! Especially for those of you who are due to submit an article for it!

As ever, feel free to pass on any issues/comments/ ideas to any member of the Editorial Board.

Report from the Publications Committee for Chapter Committee Meeting 7th February 2001

Datawatch:

Datawatch issue number 47 is currently at the printers. . There was a slight delay in transmitting to the printers due to the requirement for exceptionally stringent proof reading on Andy Farrington’s article. Publication is imminent.

Can I remind anyone providing copy for edition 48 that the final date for copy is 26th February. John Hunter is co-ordinating the article bank so please liaise with him re any promised articles. More copy is still always welcome!

The Publications Committee will be holding a meeting the week after this meeting so if any Committee members have any issues to be brought up at this please let one of us know.

The Committee have plans to refresh the style of the Datawatch front covers regularly at the suggestion of Nancy and to this end intend to purchase a library of photographs for on going use.

Website:

Allan’s work on the web site continues so please make sure you visit it regularly and feed back any comments.

Can I remind anyone providing copy for edition 48 that the final date for copy is 26th February. John Hunter is co-ordinating the article bank so please liaise with him re any promised articles. More copy is still always welcome!

Advertising

BH reported that attempts to drum up new advertising business had so far been unsuccessful and was not sure why. Maybe because our membership is not seen as a buying group. After discussion it was agreed that there was little we could do to make DW more attractive to advertisers. BH has a list of 30 advertisers identified and they will be split between the members of the Publications Committee for a follow up phone call to be made.

Actions:

BH to send letters to NW for dispatch then to advise Committee Members re follow up

AEL to chase up the two recent advertising enquiries. done

Dublin

The committee took a decision to sent Ireland Chapter free copies of DW this edition (46) and then charge them from January. We will need to get this ratified at the next main committee meeting on 6th September. Then NW will inform Bronwyn.

Actions:

AEL to include decision in report to committee

NW to contact Bronwyn

Website

There was discussion as to web site services. It was agreed that AB would change the look of the site to make it feel fresher and more up to the minute in style. It was also agreed that we would publish back issues of the lead articles in DW on the web site for members’ convenience. So when issue 46 is published, issue 45 will go up on the site.

The discussion board has experienced some problems – AB will rectify this

AB has made contact with the Northern Chapter web master.

Actions:

AB to put up new style web site in parallel and email URL to Pub Cttee members for agreement before making live.

AB to write article for DW to publicise discussion boards

AB to put site statistics on web site

Entry form for the Chapter newsletter competition is in hand.

Apologies: Nancy Watt

Bill Hawkins

Matters discussed:

  1. The article bank and articles for DW 45

Theme of the magazine is likely to be ecommerce.

Actions:

AL to contact David Spavin re CISA article

AL to contact Derek Oliver re article on CISA (this may be what we have already had)

JH to contact US newsgroup as a source of articles

AF will do a Newshound for DW45

AF to contact Kevin Baron, programmer at HSBC re the possibility of either;

AL to chase GP re promised article

AL to chase SB re promised article

AL to email Northern and Central Chapters re their articles

  1. Advertising strategy

The committee endorsed Bill Hawkins’ advertising strategy with the proviso that they felt it would be useful to have an objective for increasing advertising revenue. £1000 per edition was chosen as an initial target

Advertising rates were to be left the same for the time being.

AF pointed out that in the past he had achieved results from sending a mail shot to all the recruitment and conference hosting companies. He pointed out that MIS had advertised in DW before.

Actions:

AB to research the possibilities of banner advertising re web adverts and to liaise with BH re the potential of offering these as a package to advertisers with DW ads

JH to liaise with AW to determine how he is accounting for DW and to propose a solution that the committee will feel is more accurate

AL to contact NW re the possibility of offering smaller sized adverts – 12 to a page for a smaller sum – eg £50 to encourage smaller companies to advertise their services.

  1. Website

AB had 2 initiatives to discuss:

  1. A discussion board for the use of ISACA members. An email discussion list was also suggested as a possiblity.
  2. There had been a request from a member, Bob Oliver for a list of previous articles in DW to be available on the web site for members to refer to and if required request back copies via Nancy or the library.

Actions:

AB to research both suggestions under point a) but to trial the discussion board meanwhile

AB to speak to Nancy re feasibility of obtaining articles and putting up index pages for last 10 copies of DW.

JH to provide AB with notification of Fraud SIG meetings so this can be put onto web site.

  1. DW Publication dates

Future dates for DW publication were agreed to cover 2000/2001. Nancy do these look okay to you?

Circulated as separate document.
